DAP support “My Constitution” campaign in whole of Malaysia

DAP Sarawak supports “My Constitution” campaign in the whole of Malaysia.

DAP Sarawak condemns the stance of “1 Malaysia Youth Graduands Club”which had made a police report calling on the authorities to take immediate action against the campaigners of “My Constitution” for allegedly advocating the changing of provisions in the Federal Constitution.

The Federal Constitution is a living document written for all time. It enshrines the rights of all citizens. It is the right and duty ofall Malaysians to know their rights which are enshrined in the federal constitution.

The Federal Constitution has been amended many times by the Government of the day to reflect changing needs and circumstances. There is nothing wrong or seditious about making amendment to the Constitution so long as the amendments are for the general well-being of our country.

The only problem is that the BN Government has been using their brute majority in Parliament to make amendments to the Federal Constitution which are not necessarily fair for all races or for the well-being of our country.

I was most happy to see the “My Constitution” campaign launched in West Malaysia led by Edmund Bon.

I was most happy to see the same campaign launched in Sarawak, and I must record my appreciation to those lawyers for their dedication to see the campaign a success.

These lawyers have even taken the campaign to secondary schools and have enlightened and educated students about their rights. This is important to equip them to become more worthy and loyal citizens of the country. The feedbacks had been extremely positive.

The “My Constitution” campaign is a constructive effort on the part of the legal professional body to educate members of the public and school students about their constitutional and legal rights as contained in the highest law in our land.

All citizens and students have the right to know the legal provisions in the Federal Constitution, for their knowledge will chart their future and the future of the country.

The “My Constitution” campaign is non-political and I have given my full support and will continue to do so.

The stance of “1 Malaysia Youth Graduands Club” is an affront to common sense.

They should study the provisions of the Federal Constitution more closely and respect the rights of all Malaysians, irrespective of race, religion and creed.

They should live up to the concept of a true “1Malaysia” where all Malaysians must be fairly treated.

I have read the booklets and brochures which are written for “My Constitution” campaign. They do not contain seditious materials. Rather, they list out certain rights of citizens.

Clearly the “1 Malaysia Youth Graduands Club” has unjustly discredited the good efforts of the legal professional body in educating Malaysian citizens of their constitutional rights.

The “1Malaysia” campaign had in fact been graced by personnel such as Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia and the Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Tan Sri Richard Malanjum.

I know as a fact that the Sarawak Government contributed to the campaign fund of “MyConstitution” in Sarawak.
